Tell me what to do. (You know you want to)
So my birthday’s coming up, and my dad’s planning on getting me a used computer, since he finally got the hint that my circa 1997, 3.5 gig HD, crashes-on-the-half-hour model isn’t doing me or my online classes any good.

So I’m supposed to let him know what my requirements are. I just need to get the tower (or whatever one calls the horizontal box if it comes that way – I’ve got the peripherals, except for speakers, which got lost in the move.

Anyway, I need advice on the matter. What does one need in a pc to be able to keep up? I’d like to be able to run photoshop and the like, have space to download those TV files you all keep talking about, etc. Do I need a DVD drive, or will a CDRW do me well enough? I’ve always wanted to learn how to vid. What kind of power do I need to make that feasible?

Related to the last question, is anyone looking to unload their older (but not too old) pc? Depending on costs/shipping (I don’t know for sure what my dad’s willing to pay), maybe one of you has an option for me.

Help?

In other news, typos and misheard things are again amusing me. Case in point, the jingle for a well known discount superstore, which I keep hearing as “The Gay Bar Store” instead of K-Mart store.” And, in a fic I recently read (I paraphrase) “ Character X messaged his temple, he had a headache.” What, did he expect the Rabbi to say a prayer?

Oh, dude, desktops are so cheap these days, especially minus monitor, you could probably swing a new one. Or, short of that, try the Dell Outlet at dell.com. It's basically computers that people bought, had for a week, then sent back because they got cold feet or their spouse flipped or whatever. Dell tests them and repackages them as used when they're pretty much new machines, and sells them at a discount. Since it's a desktop you'll have enough hard drive space without trying--I have 60 GB in a laptop, and that's been plenty for my music and TV proclivities. Desktops often come standard with that or more. You don't really need a DVD if you have one with your TV, but honestly the cost differential between a CDRW and DVDCDRW these days is often laughable. Though if you do want to do vidding you will need memory, which can be the costly part--512 at the very minimum, though if you're serious about vidding/graphics manipulation I'd recommend at least 1GB.

If you plan on burning any downloaded TV programs to disc, you should consider the DVD-RW instead of CD-RW... most hour-long shows end up as 350 MB files, which is just a little too big to get two episodes on a single CD. If you think you'll just watch and then delete, it obviously doesn't matter.

The three most important things to me are processor speed, memory and hard drive size. Get the most memory you can get if you plan to use Photoshop, my system has a gig of memory and damn is my computer fast. My hard drive is a about 100 gig, yeah I know and my processer is 3.4 ghz.

I would get a DVD-R because they are cheaper now and you will be able to copy more than a CDR.
